HISD’s ratings have improved since 2023 as more students are now meeting state standards on test scores, narrowing campus achievement gaps, as well as preparedness for college, career, or military after graduation.

As a result, there is a shrinking relationship between the average socioeconomic makeup of a student body and their academic performance.

While Houston ISD saw increases in State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) scores districtwide, New Education System (NES) students saw over three times the growth on math and reading tests.

Prior to the NES implementation in fall 2023, HISD lagged behind the state average in all STAAR assessments. This year, 10 of the 12 third to eighth grade math and reading tests met or exceeded the state average.

New mid-year data shows Houston ISD students are growing at a faster rate than comparable urban districts nationwide, with HISD leaders pointing to math as the district’s “strongest success story.”

To understand what’s fueling that momentum, HISD spoke with high-performing math teachers about the classroom strategies driving results across the district.
